It was two outs in the top of the first. Willow Cabin was still up to bat against the adults. The score was 70 bizillion to nothing. We had been playing for two hours in the afternoon sun when I made the decision to call a time out for a water break. Although the campers needed the water more than the adults, they wanted to keep playing. But we made them stop because we were tired.
Willow Cabin has about 10 boys who suffer from some very serious skin diseases. A few are in wheel chairs and some are heavily bandaged. Many will not make it past the age of 20. Playing baseball is something they never get to do during the year, but this week at Camp Wonder, they get to be like all the other kids. Yes we bend the rules of baseball. Yes we play like circus clowns in the outfield. Yes we let the kids take advantage of us. But when you see the smiles on their faces and you know it is all worthwhile.
What are you doing for someone else?
Matthew 20:28 …just as the Son did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Note: Camp Wonder in Livermore is sponsored by the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation. The one week camp is for children aged 7-16 years old with serious and fatal skin diseases. They have skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, epidermolysis bullosa, pemphigus, ichthyosis, alopecia, and vitiligo. When you first see these campers, you know they have a skin condition, they look different. Many people are turned off by the children’s appearance, which may lead them to look down on the children and stay away from them.
