During the last week of June, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Camp Wonder in Livermore which is sponsored by the Children’s Skin Disease Foundation. The one week camp is for children aged 7-16 years old with serious and fatal skin diseases. They have skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, epidermolysis bullosa, pemphigus, ichthyosis, alopecia, and vitiligo. When you first see these campers, you know they have a skin condition, they look different. Many people are turned off by the children’s appearance, which may lead them to look down on the children and stay away from them.
All the campers look forward to this one week during the entire year because Camp Wonder allows the kids to be kids. They are free to be themselves. They do not have to hide their skin condition. Everyone is just like them. They are accepted just as they are. Jesus accepts us just as we are. He does not ask us to change in order to be saved. He says come. Why can’t we accept others just as they are?
Romans 15:7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. |
