My little nephew Dion likes to follow me along when I work in the backyard. I usually like to put him to work by watering the plants. He was finished so he went up the stairs where my wife was. I shouted up to my wife Karen that he was coming. Next thing I heard was a loud splash in the swimming pool. I thought, "Uh, oh, no one should be in the pool," so I quickly ran up to see.

When I reached the pool, I saw Dion struggling to stay above the water with fear in his eyes. Karen was trying to reach him but he was too far away from the side. So I quickly jumped in and pulled him out. Dion was now safe. I then asked Karen what happened. She said he was there one minute and the next minute he was in the pool. She only took her eyes off of him for a second.

This accident reminded me that it only takes a second for something tragic to happen.

This accident reminded me that we have to be on guard (especially with children around).

This accident reminded me that we have to be alert and aware of what is going on around us.

1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith..."

How can we resist the devil?
James 4:7-8 explains, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you..."

Often times I, and I suspect you, will go into the day without drawing near to God. When we start our day without God, we are very vulnerable to the devil's attacks. The devil is looking for easy prey, someone not self-controlled, not alert, not standing firm in the faith, someone not submitted to God.
So be ready for the devil by submitting to God each day and thus being able to resist the devil.
