We just finished our first day of rebuilding houses that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in August 2005. We walked and drove along the streets here. There are still many empty houses with a large red "x" on the wall, empty slabs of concrete where a house once stood, overgrown yards that were once mowed, and empty shells where stores like Wal-Mart, Sears and grocery stores once provided vital services to the community.

However, though out the area, we are seeing spots of rebuilding and growth.  New homes are being put up, a new Walgreens is bustling with business, and a shaved ice business always seems to have a long line of customers.

The spots of rebuilding are not only giving hope to the residents here, but also to the hundreds of volunteers that are still coming even though Hurricane Katrina hit over two and a half years ago. The residents I have talked to are so thankful that people still care even though the post-hurricane needs does not make the front page or nightly news.

The owner of the house we are rebuilding said he feels blessed that people are taking time out to come and knows that God is providing a blessing for him and those who volunteer.  I am so thankful we are here because we are fulfilling one of our memory verses for the year. Matthew 25:40 (NLV) says, "Then the King will say, 'For sure, I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of My brothers, you have done it to Me."

The least of my brothers are not only the disaster victims but those in prison, those who are hungry, those who are thirsty, those with no friends, those without proper clothing, and those who you know need help.

Don't think about it, just go and help the least of those because you do it in Christ.
